A 37-year-old man has been arrested after reports that gunshots were fired in a residential area of St Helens on Saturday morning (18 July).

Police were called shortly after 9am following reports that shots had been discharged on Lemon Tree Walk during the early hours.

No injuries were reported.

Armed officers later arrested a man from St Helens on suspicion of firearm offences. He remains in custody while enquiries continue.

During searches of the area, officers recovered several spent casings.

A BB gun and a blank firing pistol were also later found at the scene.

A police cordon remains in place on Lemon Tree Walk as investigators carry out the initial stages of their investigation, including CCTV examinations and house-to-house enquiries.

Detective Inspector Steven Byrom said:

“Although armed officers made a swift arrest this morning after the incident I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed what happened, or has any information which could help us with our inquiries to come forward.

“I would also like to appeal to anyone who lives in the area, who has doorbell footage that may have captured the incident to get in touch.

“I would like to reassure anyone who lives in the area that our officers immediately respond to incidents such as these involving firearms and remain in the area carrying out witness enquiries.

“We are relentless in our pursuit of any offenders who carry dangerous weapons in our community and urge anyone who has any information to contact us so we can continue out investigation.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact Merseyside Police.
