An 85-year-old man has been reportedly assaulted after a break-in at his home in Haslingden.

Police were called in the early hours of this morning (29 April) to reports of a burglary on Moss Close.

An 85-year-old man was left with a head injury and cuts to his face after he confronted the burglars, officers say.

He's currently being treated in hospital.

His 86-year-old wife was unharmed.

The suspects reportedly broke in through the front door, before smashing their way out of the property through the conservatory after assaulting the man.

Officers say it is not known whether anything was taken, but there's damage to the house.

Det Sgt Stu Peall, from Lancashire Police, said: “This is a deplorable offence, committed against an elderly couple in their own home. It’s an utterly heartless, cowardly and despicable offence and we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to find those responsible.

“This couple can’t have been a serious threat to anyone, the level of violence used is obscene and I appeal to anyone with knowledge of the offence or the identity of the offenders to come forward. Even those in or on the periphery of crime cannot surely condone this behaviour and I would appeal to them to do what is right and to come forward if they have any information.”

Detectives are now appealing for anyone with information or CCTV footage of the area between 2:15am-3:15am that could assist with the investigation to come forward.

Reports can be made by calling 101 quoting log 0126 of April 29th.
