Residents in parts of Leyland and Chorley say the smell from the site is making them ill

The Environment Agency has said it is investigating what action it can take against the company behind a landfill site that some residents have described as 'the fires of hell'

Clayton Hall Landfill Site has been at the centre of controversy for a number of months now, after local residents complained the smell was making them ill.

They were given until March 19th to cover parts of the site, to contain the smell.

The Environment Agency also banned the site from taking in any more rubbish while it dealt with the problem.

But Quercia, the company behind the landfill, have now missed the deadline to fix the problem.

They have said that the work will be done by March 26th.

But the Environemtn Agency have now said they are investigating and reviewing what action to take:

"The current notice will remain in force until the company have complied with it. They will still not be able to accept any waste to be deposited on the landfill while the notice is in force.

We understand that the landfill odours have been and continue to be extremely distressing for residents in the area. Our priority has been to ensure the operator resolves the odour problem as soon as possible.

The Environment Agency will continue to monitor the hydrogen sulphide levels in the community while the strong persistent odour is present. We would like to thank residents for keeping us informed of where the smell has been present and strongest to inform locations for testing. We will continue to publish our data onto Citizen Space."
