The family of a man killed in a fatal car crash near Lancaster have paid tribute to their "family man".

Police in Lancashire were alerted to an incident at 7:47pm on Saturday (October 31st) after a serious car crash between a blue Vauxhall Agila and a white Peugeot Partner van on the A6, close to Lancaster University.

A passenger in the van was seriously injured following the crash and, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, it was confirmed he had passed away at the scene.

The victim has now been named as 88-year-old Alan Williamson from Lancaster, as his family released a public tribute to him.

"Alan was born in 1938 in Lancaster. He grew up in Lancaster with his two brothers Dennis and Geoff," the statement read. "He was a family man, and he married Jean before they went on to have two children - Peter and Karen.

“In his working life, Alan worked at Heysham Power Station, Storeys and Standfast. In his spare time Alan enjoyed a pint, a game of snooker and birdwatching. He also did a lot of walking in his younger years with his late wife Jean.

“Alan will be very sadly missed by all who knew him.”

The driver of the Vauxhall, believed to be a man in his 60s also from Lancaster, currently remains in a critical condition in hospital. A second passenger in the Peugeot, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The driver of the van, described as a man in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He has since been released pending further enquiries.

Lancashire Police are now appealing to the public to help with any information that could help their investigations, particularly anyone who may have witnessed the collision itself or have any relevant dashcam or CCTV footage.

Anyone who may have any information on the crash can get in touch by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 1364 from October 31st.
