Lancashire swimmer makes history with Oceans Seven completion
Karen Ennis triumphs in Tsugaru Strait swim
Karen Ennis, a 54-year-old from Burscough, has made history by becoming the first British woman to complete the Oceans Seven, a formidable and dangerous series of endurance swims.
Ennis faced her final challenge in Japan's Tsugaru Strait, a 12.1-mile stretch between Honshu and Hokkaido, which connects the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean.
Overcoming extreme conditions, Ennis's successful swim follows a previous attempt in July 2025, when she was forced out due to a torn shoulder ligament and powerful currents.
After a year of recovery and dedicated preparation, Ennis returned to claim victory during a swim window from 18th to 22nd June 2026.
Karen Ennis: A Story of Persistence
Karen Ennis's journey to complete the Oceans Seven has been marked by both personal and physical challenges.
Her decision to pursue these swims was inspired by loss and dedication to fundraising for Alder Hey Charitable Trust.
Her swimming achievements include conquering the English Channel and the North Channel, among other challenging swims.
Ennis's resilience and determination have not only carried her through physical feats but have also helped her navigate personal struggles, such as the loss of her husband and PTSD.
Endurance in the Face of Adversity
Throughout the Oceans Seven, Ennis has faced severe challenges from the elements.
During her journey, she encountered stings from Man of War jellyfish and became seasick due to powerful waves. Her dedication has seen her through moments of difficulty, such as swimming without a wetsuit for protection against the cold ocean and jellyfish.
Despite these trials, her journey also brought lighter moments, like swimming alongside a pod of wild dolphins.
By completing all seven swims, Ennis has raised significant funds for Alder Hey Children's Charity, with a pledge to raise £100,000 to support families and children.
The Ocean’s Seven, the swimming counterpart to the Seven Summits mountaineering challenge, has been completed by Karen Ennis through her unwavering commitment and perseverance.
