A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after James Bulger's grave was vandalised at Kirkdale Cemetery.
Officers receieved reports on 10 April that the grave had been damaged.
Other graves were also vandalised and ornaments had been stolen.
A 78-year-old man from the Lancashire area was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and theft, and later detained under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act.
He's currently in a mental health hospital.
Officers recovered the stolen ornaments and returned them to the rightful families.
Detective Inspector Jemma Berry said: “We understand this incident would have caused concern for the local community and I hope members of the public feel reassured by this decision. I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to one of our officers or contact their local police station.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank James’ family and the other families whose gravestones were damaged for their ongoing support throughout our investigation.”
