Blackpool's iconic Illuminations have been credited with bringing substantial economic benefits to the town during their 18-week run last year.
According to research, the Lights attracted two in every five visitors to Blackpool, generating an estimated £300 million for the local economy.
A survey's found that the Illuminations were the driving force behind visits for 40% of people coming to Blackpool during late summer and autumn.
An even larger proportion, seven in ten respondents, indicated that the Illuminations led them to explore other attractions and venues across town.
The economic impact extends beyond the Lights themselves, as 58% of visitors reportedly spent £100 or more on food, drink, and entertainment.
One-third of visitors spent £200 or more, and for those who stayed overnight, an average spend of £400 per group was recorded.
Residents also engaged with local businesses, with 69% dining out and 52% visiting other attractions while enjoying the Illuminations.
The Lights, featuring festoons along a six-mile stretch of the promenade and large-scale interactive displays, are widely seen as integral to Blackpool's identity.
A report to Blackpool Council's scrutiny committee conservatively estimates that the Illuminations contribute £300 million to the town's economy annually.
In 2024/25, the council invested £1.7 million in the development, delivery, and staffing of the event, yielding approximately £200 for every £1 invested.
Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council and cabinet member for tourism, arts and culture, emphasised the significance of the Illuminations.
She said: “The Illuminations are one of the brightest jewels in Blackpool’s crown - truly unique, globally recognised, and a defining part of the town’s identity and cultural heritage.”
Williams highlighted the Lights' ability to draw visitors from across the Fylde coast and beyond, boosting local businesses and employment.
The council's commitment to the event extends to the skilled craftsmanship and creativity showcased by the Lightworks team in Blackpool.
Survey insights show accommodation spending is another key element of the economic boost, with 82% of visitors spending over £100 on stays.
A significant percentage, one in five, spent £500 or more on accommodation during their visit.
The Illuminations' enduring appeal is well demonstrated: two-thirds of residents and one-third of visitors experienced them three or more times last year.
Looking ahead, 88% of visitors and 81% of residents anticipate returning to see the Lights again this year, continuing the tradition.
