Prisoner charged with murder after inmate found dead at HMP Garth

A prisoner at HMP Garth has been charged with murder following the death of fellow inmate Tony Joynes.
The incident was reported to Lancashire Police at 9:08 am on 13th July 2025 after Joynes, 47, was found deceased in his cell.
An investigation was initiated by the Force Major Investigation Team, leading to the arrest of Shaun Newton, 35, on 22nd July at the prison.
Following a consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, Newton was charged with Joynes' murder.
Newton remains in the custody of the prison service and is set to appear before Preston Magistrates Court today, Thursday, 26th March.
The case marks a serious event at HMP Garth, as law enforcement and judicial authorities seek to address the accused's actions within the prison system.
