Fylde Council leader reflects on 2025 success and looks ahead to 2026
Progress in events, culture, and town improvements celebrated
The leader of Fylde Council, Cllr Karen Buckley, has described 2025 as a year of significant progress for the borough and expressed optimism for further achievements in 2026.
In a New Year message to Fylde residents, Conservative member Cllr Buckley highlighted cultural breakthroughs, community events, and major town improvement programs as key milestones for 2025.
Transforming St Annes
One of the standout accomplishments Cllr Buckley noted was the completion of the first phase of the St Annes Square improvements. She described the upgraded, accessible space as a "vibrant, welcoming heart for the town," which had already become a hub for community events.
Looking ahead, she confirmed that phase two of the St Annes Masterplan is set to begin in 2026, focusing on the Garden Street and Pier Link projects to enhance connectivity and further develop St Annes as a destination for visitors.
Cultural achievements
Cllr Buckley praised the opening of the Fylde Gallery, which now hosts museum-standard exhibitions and showcases the Lytham St Annes Art Collection, one of the most significant municipal collections in the UK.
“This new cultural hub not only preserves our artistic heritage but also makes it accessible to residents, schools and visitors, reinforcing Fylde’s unique identity," she said.
Thriving events calendar
The council’s events calendar flourished throughout 2025, with highlights including the Fylde Fest: in the Square celebrating local talent and creativity, as well as recurring favourites like the 1940s Wartime Weekend, International Kite Festival, and Ice Festival.
Swimming opportunities in Fylde
Residents were reassured about swimming provision, as Places Leisure is set to take over operations of St Annes Pool from April 2026. Cllr Buckley also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to reopening Kirkham Baths, saying funding options are actively being explored.
"As we enjoy the festive season, let’s also remember that while this is a time of joy for many, it can be challenging for others," Cllr Buckley added. “If you know someone in need of support – whether it’s shelter, warmth, food or companionship – please guide them to one of the many local organisations ready to help.”
