A former director of Morecambe Football Club has spoken out about the human cost of the ongoing ownership crisis, as current owners Bond Group Investments Ltd (BGI) confirm a takeover deal is close to completion.

James Wakefield, a lifelong fan and former board member, says the uncertainty surrounding the club has left staff and players fearing for their futures. “There are people genuinely sitting at home right now thinking, ‘I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to keep this flat or pay this bill,’” he said. “It’s people’s actual livelihoods that are being threatened—and they’ve done absolutely nothing wrong.”

Yesterday evening after days of silence BGI released a statement confirming that a consortium led by individuals with “genuine football experience” is finalising a deal to acquire the club.

They added that, despite speculation, the identities of the buyers have not yet been made public and recent guesses are inaccurate.

Wakefield warned that the ongoing situation is taking its toll with staff still unpaid and events at the Mazuma Stadium cancelled. “Players at this level aren’t paid vast sums of money. They’ve got mortgages, rent, bills—just like anyone else. Every single person who relies on the club for their income is genuinely fearful.”

The ownership row began when investment group Panjab Warriors accused BGI of pulling out of a previously agreed sale, despite claims they had EFL approval and had already provided financial support to the club. The group is now seeking legal advice and may pursue action for misrepresentation and recovery of funds.

BGI said the incoming buyers have funds available to bring payments up to date and praised the speed of their legal team in progressing the deal. “We are working to conclude the transaction as quickly as possible,” the statement read.

As the club awaits confirmation of the sale, the community continues to rally around affected staff, with local organisations stepping in to offer support.
