Fleetwood to Knott End Ferry to keep running after funding found
An agreement has been reached between Lancashire County Council, Wyre Council and the operator of the ferry to keep it running with extra funding
The Fleetwood to Knott End Ferry will continue running until at least September 2027 after extra funding was agreed.
Lancashire County Council has agreed to provide an extra £62,000 to support the service during the current financial year.
The council had already committed £57,110 a year and has paid its contribution for 2026.
The extra funding, along with money already agreed for 2027/28, is expected to keep the ferry running until September 2027.
It means passengers can continue using the service while discussions take place about its longer-term future.
County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: "We have carefully considered the request for additional funding and worked through the detail before reaching this decision.
"This additional funding of £62,000 was not budgeted for, and we have identified the money at short notice to protect a service we know is valued locally."
He continued: "Any longer-term funding arrangement will need robust commercial arrangements in place to ensure the service is both viable and affordable.
"We are prepared to support that process and help ensure any future arrangements are put in place in a legal and compliant way."
