The Eden Project is hosting a ‘ground-breaking’ ceremony to mark the start of construction work at its Morecambe site and a public event explaining its next steps.

Bosses say June 24 will mark the beginning of the construction phase on site.

The new, approved design for the £100m attraction features two main shell-shaped domes and gardens – rather than four domes in the original plan.

The design had to be reduced because of rising costs and other factors. But Eden bosses insist it will still have a ‘wow’ factor to attract visitors and help regenerate Morecambe.

Building work will begin with the Bring Me Sunshine Garden this summer, following the garden’s success at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Andy Jasper, Eden’s chief executive, said: “We will host a very special event on June 24. The breaking ground ceremony will bring together dignitaries, funders, core stakeholders and the local community on the site to mark the moment before work officially begins.

“It will be like the ‘clay pit moment’ before construction started at Eden Project Cornwall, which we reflect on a lot. The people who stood there on the cusp of transformation in Cornwall were part of something very special. And we want to give people in Morecambe that same sense of being part of something important that they can reflect on in years to come. History in the making.”

Morecambe’s Winter Gardens venue will host the latest Eden Community Conversation at 4.30pm on June 24. Guests will hear from the project team and the main contractor, VINCI Building, about what happens next at the promenade site. There will be insight into the construction process and key stages ahead. Places for this event are free but booking is needed. More details will be announced.

The previous government earmarked £50m towards the Morecambe development in phases while the Eden Project has to raise another £50m from donors and supporters.

Planning permission for the revised design was granted in February this year and the main contractor was appointed in April. Then in May, the project grabbed national attention at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, when the coastal-inspired Bring Me Sunshine Garden received two accolades.

The garden was designed by Harry Holding and Alex Michaelis and made with youngsters from Morecambe. It received an RHS Silver-Gilt medal and the Environmental Innovation Award.

It will be the first part of the Morecambe site to be developed this summer. Thousands of plants from the Chelsea show have been transported to Morecambe. It will form part of a bigger, 1.5-acre community garden, due to open next spring. And Lancaster City Council is helping to look after the plants

The garden will have materials reflecting Morecambe Bay’s heritage and a solar‑powered, shell‑shaped canopy with local limestone. It will shelter an outdoor classroom for horticulture, crafts and digital learning.

Dewey Lord, an Eden project manager based in Morecambe, is overseeing the garden’s development. He said: “It’s incredibly rewarding to see this vision starting to take shape. As the plants arrive here ahead of installation in their permanent home, I’m excited to take this project into the next phase.”

Also this summer, the Eden Project is involved in other Morecambe events. These include the Three Degrees Festival on June 27 with the More Music community organisation; a Morecambe Bay Curriculum education conference on July 3, and two markets with the Morecambe BID business network on July 18 and August 22.

Education, jobs, skills and work with local businesses are among the aims of the Eden Morecambe scheme.
