Police and Commissioner Clive Grunshaw has unveiled a pioneering initiative to improve support for victims of domestic abuse in Lancashire.

The scheme, being piloted in Preston, introduces eight dedicated Domestic Abuse Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to enhance frontline support and offer reassurance to victims.

Specialist training to tackle abuse

The newly appointed Domestic Abuse PCSOs will receive specialist training to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary for their unique roles.

Commissioner Grunshaw praised the scheme as the first of its kind in the country, saying: "These additional PCSOs will be a trusted point of contact for victims, offering reassurance, guidance, and access to support services while bringing a visible, reassuring presence to local communities.”

The PCSOs will work closely with specialist officers, partner agencies and community groups, focusing on early intervention, sharing intelligence and identifying risks.

Commissioner Grunshaw added: “By combining the core responsibilities of a PCSO with a dedicated emphasis on domestic abuse, this initiative represents meaningful progress in how officers engage with and protect those most at risk.”

Impact on victims and communities

Assistant Chief Constable Stasia Osiowy emphasised the importance of supporting victims at the earliest opportunity, saying: “These new roles are another step forward in supporting victims of domestic abuse at the earliest opportunity, helping to remove the barriers to seeking help.”

She highlighted the broad benefits of the pilot scheme for local communities, adding: “The work of the Domestic Abuse PCSOs will help improve quality of life, reduce fear of crime in local communities and, most importantly, safeguard and support victims.”

Next steps

The pilot scheme will be independently evaluated in Preston before any potential rollout to other areas in Lancashire.

Victims of domestic abuse in the county can access specialist support through Victim Support, funded by Commissioner Grunshaw. The charity’s trained professionals offer confidential, non-judgmental assistance while prioritising safety. More information is available at victimsupport.org.uk/lancashire.
