A vigil has been held at the University of Lancashire after the death of one of their students.

19-year old Carla-Maria Joguescu was found dead on 5th February in a student accommodation on Victoria Street.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Students' Union said the vigil was an opportunity for people "to come together, reflect, and pay their respects".

They continued, "We will remember Carla-Maria and offer our heartfelt sympathy to everyone impacted by this loss."

Flowers and heartfelt messages were left at St Peter's Square (between the Students' Union and the Library) on the Preston Campus.

One message from the University said: "Carla- Maria,

"Our university community is devastated by your tragic loss.

"You will always be remembered and forever in out thoughts."

A book of condolences with messages from staff and students was also left at the Students’ Union Welcome Point.

Murder charge

34-year-old Nathan Owens, who's from Hartlepool, has been charged with Carla-Maria's murder.

He appeared before Preston Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning (10th February).

A University of Lancashire spokesperson said: “We are aware that a man has now been charged with the murder of our student Carla-Maria Georgescu. We are all deeply saddened by this tragic loss - we are a university in mourning.

“The wellbeing and safety of our students and staff is our priority and we want to reassure our community that the man charged with this crime was unconnected with the university but known to Carla-Maria.

"Support is being offered to anyone within the university who is affected by this devastating incident and our thoughts are very much with loved ones, friends, and all those who knew Carla-Maria at this incredibly distressing time."
