Blackpool Zoo animals enjoy creative ways to cool down
Zoo keepers use sprinklers, ice lollies and more to keep animals comfortable
Amid one of Britain’s hottest Junes on record, Blackpool Zoo has devised ingenious methods to keep its animals cool.
The animal care team is ensuring that the zoo’s inhabitants are comfortable with a variety of cooling activities.
Sea lions are spending extra time in their pool enjoying sprats frozen into giant ice blocks, while lemurs savour fruity ice lollies.
Kawan, a Bornean orangutan, makes use of a refreshing sprinkler shower, and the giant anteaters indulge in a wet mud bath.
Tapirs can be spotted bobbing around in their own pool.
Zoo keepers actively monitor all species during hot weather and adapt routines accordingly, employing frozen treats, sprinklers, shaded areas, and mud baths to maintain comfort during heatwaves.
Blackpool Zoo is part of Parques Reunidos, the second-largest European leisure parks operator.
Occupying 37 acres, it houses over 1,000 animals including elephants, giraffes, big cats, gorillas, and more.
The zoo, open every day except Christmas Day, belongs to The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA).
BIAZA supports conservation projects, research initiatives, and educational sessions, collectively contributing substantially to field conservation efforts globally.
