Blackpool sees high proportion of Neets among young people, study reveals
Centre for Cities highlights urban challenges
A study conducted by the Centre for Cities has identified Blackpool as having one of the highest proportions of young people not in employment, education or training, known as Neets, in England.
According to the research, 21% of Blackpool's young population falls into the Neet category, a figure significantly higher than many other urban areas across the country.
This statistic reflects the distinctive challenges faced by Blackpool in providing employment and training opportunities for its youth.
Rob Johnson, senior analyst at the Centre for Cities, pointed to the scale of the issue, underlining the need for locally-driven solutions.
Johnson said, "In places like Blackpool, the proportion of young people affected is very high. This demonstrates that there can't be a single national solution."
He advocated for the strengthening of local economies and granting of powers to mayors to address barriers such as skills development and access to education and jobs.
The study suggests that tailored interventions are essential in tackling the specific economic and social obstacles within cities like Blackpool.
