A man has been charged with murder following a fatal collision in Accrington town centre, which claimed the life of Matthew Weller, 44.

Lancashire Police received a call from the ambulance service shortly after 10pm on Wednesday, 22nd April, reporting that Weller was struck by a VW Passat at the junction of Blackburn Road and Birch Street.

Weller suffered serious injuries and, despite efforts from medical personnel, died later in hospital.

His family are being supported by specially trained officers during this difficult time.

The VW Passat involved in the collision failed to stop and was later discovered abandoned.

Muhammad Haarith, 22, from Exchange Street, Accrington, has been charged with Mr Weller’s murder following his arrest on Thursday evening.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Preston Magistrates Court on 25th April.

Four other men, including three 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old, were arrested earlier but have been released on bail pending further enquiries.
