The EFL Board has confirmed that the Sky Bet Championship clash between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town will be replayed in full following its abandonment on Saturday, 20th September.
The game was halted in the 79th minute after the referee removed the players from the pitch due to heavy rainfall which left the playing surface unplayable.
The EFL said the Board “comprehensively considered all options available in accordance with the Regulations alongside representations made by both Clubs” before reaching its decision.
It was confirmed that, by a majority, the outcome was for the fixture to be replayed in full. The Board stated the move was in line with recent precedents regarding abandoned matches and was intended to “uphold the integrity of the League competition which should, wherever possible, be based on a complete set of fixtures played to a conclusion on the day.”
The three Championship Directors abstained from the vote.
Acknowledging the difficulty of the situation, the EFL also confirmed it would consult with Clubs on the development of new guidance for handling future match abandonments.
A new date for the rescheduled fixture will be announced by Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town in due course.
