The World Custard Pie Championships are taking place Maidstone

The World Custard Pie Championships are set to take place today in Maidstone.
The event, born from a fundraising idea by local villagers in 1964, features an array of activities beyond pie throwing, with all proceeds going to local charities.
Attendees will be able to enjoy stalls, a tug of war, and a children's wet sponge competition, a training ground for future pie throwers, with the hope for sunny weather.
Geoff Cooke, main organiser and presenter of the championships, told us:
“It's good old-fashioned fun, really. Despite getting quite serious as a world championship, everyone is here for a laugh.”
Talking about the pies themselves, he declined to share their secret ingredients, only saying: "It's not real custard, it's a secret recipe. It does involve flour and water.
"The consistency of the pies is key.
"It needs to have like the right consistency so it travels well with the right velocity and has the right effect on impact."
On the competition he added: "It's a World Championship, so it has to be well regulated.
"We have a team of accountants that do the judging for us.
"Each team has five pies each in the first round, twenty pies per each team, so a team of four.
"And you have to throw with your left hand at the opposition, that's 8 foot apart.
"Then in the semi-final, they have 7 pies each.
"And in the final, they have 10 pies each."
This year Geoff expects a crowd of 1,500 - 2,000, with 23 teams of four signed up to compete.
Previous competitions have included entrants who travelled from as far as France and Japan to take part.
