Thanet resident serves council with notice after months of missed bin collection
Residents in both Margate and Ramsgate say issue has been ongoing since April
A man from Ramsgate has served Thanet District Council with a notice for bin and waste collection failure, after what he says has been months of issues.
Steven Keeley told Hits and Greatest Hits Kent:
"This has been going on for 3 months now, it's changed ever since they changed the system.
"It was working fine before.
"We've had reports of maggots and rats and rubbish not being taken for a couple of weeks at some places. "
He noted that after filing his street was swiftly cleared, but expressed concern for other neighbours:
"For me, that was the biggest red flag of them all.
"They come to my street only after the complaint and then cleaned outside my property, took pictures, before and after, within 4 hours.
"I've been inundated with emails with correspondence between residents of Thanet going back 3 months with nothing being done for them. So, there's clearly a very big issue here, the residents are not being listened to and they should be respected.
"Especially when it's peak season. I mean, what is this going to do to the holiday market and the revenue coming in from outside?
"This is an extremely important time of year and the council are just destroying it."
The Simple Recycling Scheme was introduced across Thanet on April 13th.
A Thanet District Council spokesperson said:
This notice was received by the council’s legal team on Friday 24 July. The legal team will carefully consider the matter and respond in due course.
The missed bins reported in this location have been collected and the surrounding area cleared.
Crews were out on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July to pick up further collections missed during the week.
Following the introduction of additional rounds to support the waste and recycling service, announced earlier this month, there have been significant improvements to household collection rates. This is a trend which is expected to continue.
