A member of the public has helped police in Chatham to arrest a man on suspicion of shoplifting.

Police were called on Saturday evening (24th May) to reports of a theft at the BP petrol station on Maidstone Road.

A suspect was seen close to the scene, with an officer pursuing him on foot along Elm Avenue.

A second police officer then flagged down a passing motorist, who drove them to Wyles Road, where a man was stopped and arrested.

29 year old Callum Geary, from London Road in Maidstone, has since been charged with eight thefts across Chatham and Maidstone, taking place between 3rd April and 24th May.

He's appeared before Medway Magistrates Court yesterday (26th May) and been remanded in custody.
