A burglar who claimed he was ‘just making a sandwich’ in a stranger’s Rochester home has been jailed.

Martin Morris, 55, of Maidstone Road in Chatham, was sentenced to four years and 10 months for burglary, a shoplifting offence and breaching a suspended sentence.

According to Kent Police, Morris was interrupted while searching drawers at a home in Wallace Road at around 7pm on 7th April 2026.

He fled empty-handed, leaving behind a crutch, and the victim photographed him before he escaped.

Officers identified Morris and arrested him later that evening.

During a police interview, he denied trying to steal anything and suggested he was probably making a coffee or a sandwich.

He later pleaded guilty to burglary at Maidstone Crown Court, where he was sentenced on 8th October.

He had also admitted the shoplifting offence.

Investigating officer Harry Groves said: “Despite Morris’ efforts to excuse his actions, the evidence he entered that house unlawfully is undeniable.

“The victim is to be congratulated for photographing this persistent criminal as this ensured it was only a matter of time before he was arrested.

“Morris is now, quite rightly, starting a prison sentence and Rochester is undoubtedly a safer place in his absence.”
