RAC predicts increased traffic across Kent as summer holidays begin
Drivers advised to prepare for potential delays and plan journeys carefully
The RAC is anticipating high levels of traffic as summer getaway trips commence, with particular focus on Kent routes.
Last weekend marked one of the busiest for getaway trips in four years, with an estimated 14.1 million drivers taking to the roads as schools break for summer.
The number of leisure trips is the second highest since RAC records began in 2016, surpassed only by 2022 when the country emerged from COVID lockdown.
Harriet Hernando, an RAC spokesperson, spoke to Greatest Hits and Hits Radio Kent:
"I think the summer staycation has gotten off to a flying start this year because more people have confidence in the British weather.
"We've seen the past sort of 10 days or so, it's just been plain sailing sun for some parts of the country.
"But I think that people also have concerns over cancelled flights, higher airfares and EU border delays. So the temptation is to jump in the car, keep it simple, go with what you know, and head somewhere in the UK for the summer holidays.
"We've also seen is that household budgets have been squeezed due to high fuel costs caused by the Iran war.
"So many are opting to spend their summer holidays here instead of battling with the costs of going abroad."
8% of drivers are expected to head to the Kent and Sussex coasts, reflecting high travel interest in these areas as summer holidays progress.
This weekend is expected to see heavy traffic, particularly on Sunday, 26th July, around 5.30pm on the M20 West between junctions 7 and 3.
Drivers should anticipate adding around 20 minutes to their travel times and are advised to pack accordingly.
The RAC urges motorists to bring ample water for passengers—including pets—as roadside delays can be uncomfortable in high temperatures without shade.
Ensuring vehicle readiness includes checking tyres for wear and cracks, maintaining correct pressures, and addressing any battery concerns, as these are common issues in hot weather.
