Ninety people have been moved out of their homes in Folkestone over safety fears following a fire at the neighbouring Grand Burstin Hotel.

Residents of Pavilion Court in Marine Terrace were relocated on Saturday evening after safety inspectors raised concerns.

They warned that the intensity of a basement fire at the hotel, which broke out early on Saturday 19th September 2026, had weakened the building's structure.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council led the relocation, with help from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and Kent Police.

Staff from Dover District Council also supported the individuals and families while they waited at the council's welfare centre at Three Hills Sports Park to be taken to hotel accommodation in the town.

Folkestone's housing team is now working to arrange alternative housing for all affected residents while the Grand Burstin undergoes further assessments and any required works to make it safe.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council Chief Executive Susan Priest said: "This has been an extremely difficult day, firstly for the hotel guests and this evening for our residents who have had to move out of their homes.

"The extent of support of organisations including Three Hills, Morrisons and the Salvation Army has been amazing and helped to ensure that visitors and residents were looked after, supported and had food and hot drinks."

The council has advised Pavilion Court residents that they will be contacted by council housing officers on Monday.

Guests from the Grand Burstin have been told to contact Britannia Hotels for further information about their belongings.
