Labour MP Lauren Edwards, representing Rochester and Stroud, has reintroduced the Assisted Dying Bill to Parliament, emphasising its progressive and compassionate nature. It's expected to be reheard today in the Commons.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Kent, Edwards said:

"This bill addresses conscience issues similar to past legislative changes regarding homosexuality, abortion access, and the death penalty."

This time she says she will be urging MPs to avoid reopening past debates. Expressing frustration over the bill being talked out in the previous parliamentary session.

The bill, a private members' proposal, allows MPs to vote based on personal conscience rather than party directives.

Although divisive, polling shows broad support across the UK for the bill's principles.

Edwards told us that she has received over 1,300 emails from constituents and national citizenss alike, emphasising the urgency and importance of the legislation:

"I would say the vast majority of people who who contacted me, some of whom are constituents and some who aren't, are particularly people absolutely desperate for this legislation to come in.

"Who've got family members who are facing painful undignified deaths and really want this legislation to come through so that they can have the choice about ending their life In a very particular set of circumstances."

She stated the bill caters only to individuals over 18 with terminal illnesses, ensuring informed consent and professional oversight.

"Ending their life through this bill would be a choice made with robust safeguards against coercion," Edwards explained.

Edwards also highlighted the powerful personal stories shared with her that underscore the bill's significance.

"I'm grateful to those who shared their reasons, reminding us there are people suffering," she added.
