More than 1,500 people are expected to take part in the Kent Downs 50 Ultra Challenge this weekend.

Walkers, joggers and runners will take on routes through Kent, with distances of 10k, 25k and 50k available.

The event is part of the wider Ultra Challenge series, but organisers say the Kent Downs event has become a favourite in the calendar.

Ultra Challenge marketing manager Elysia Sanders said the Kent event has already raised more than £200,000 for charity.

The route goes through Maidstone, with many people from the local area expected to take part alongside participants travelling from London, the wider south of England and further afield.

The Kent Downs 50 Ultra Challenge first took place in 2024, making this year’s event will be the third edition.

More than 100 charities are being fundraised for through the Kent event, including national charities, local hospices and local youth charities.

Across the wider Ultra Challenge series, organisers say they are on track to raise £12 million this year.

A mix of walkers, joggers and runners are expected to take part, with people able to do the challenge at their own pace.

Advice for people taking part

To those getting involved Sanders said:

"It all is a mental game. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Whatever speed you do it at, it's totally up to you.

"Make the most of all of the rest stops that we have. Have as much food and drink as you can."

Of the atmosphere involved she added:

"Even for staff members standing at the finish line, it's incredibly emotional watching everybody come across.

"There are stories of true resilience, perseverance, both on the challenge itself and getting to the start line of the challenge.

"So the finish line is a huge bundle of emotions from excitement, a bit of relief at lines, making it to the finish line, pride, happiness, supporters are obviously welcome there as well.

"So it's always a fantastic atmosphere and definitely a lot of smiles, some happy tears and a great moment."
