Residents have been evacuated from a block of flats in Maidstone after a flood impacted the building's electrical systems.

The incident started at Miller Heights on Monday (11th May) and affected the electrical infrastructure in the building's basement.

In response, Maidstone Borough Council has now declared the situation a Major Incident, and are working with emergency services, building management, and technical experts to address the crisis.

Councillor Stuart Jeffery, Leader of Maidstone Borough Council, stressed the priority of resident safety.

“We understand how distressing and disruptive this situation has been for residents, and our priority remains making sure everyone is safe and supported. The prohibition order has now been issued as a necessary step while we fully assess the impact of the incident and ensure all safety checks are completed," Jeffery said.

Daniel Noonan, Head of Building Safety at Kent Fire and Rescue Service, highlighted fire safety concerns that led to the prohibition notice that stops people from sleeping in the building issued yesterday.

“The safety of the public is paramount, and we will continue to work with the responsible persons for the building during this legislative process to ensure any issues are resolved," Noonan said.

Support remains available to affected residents, including emergency and temporary accommodations, welfare aid, and a rest centre for urgent assistance.

Residents are advised to prepare an essential belongings bag, with guidance available online, and arranged access to essentials from homes where safe.

Animal welfare support is also being coordinated to ensure pet safety and wellbeing.

Efforts to evaluate damage and restore services continue, with the prohibition order upheld until inspections and repairs confirm safe re-occupation.

Residents receive direct communications, and updates are provided through official channels, including the council website and social media.
