Meningitis vaccinations available for Kent and Medway students over 18
The NHS are offering free MenB vaccines as university starts, after deadly outbreak earlier this year
Dr. Kate Langford, Chief Medical Officer of NHS Kent and Medway, has announced the rollout of the meningitis B vaccination programme for eligible young people ahead of the upcoming university term.
It's following the deadly outbreak in Kent earlier this year, where two students lost their lives.
The campaign targets those in year 13 or those entering university for the first time, aiming to protect them against invasive meningitis B.
Dr. Langford explained, "Eligible individuals can book their MenB vaccine now. This is crucial as students living in halls away from home are particularly vulnerable to the spread of this disease."
For young people born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008, vaccination access is through their GP registration.
Meanwhile, those born on or after 21st July 2001 heading to university can obtain the vaccine from participating pharmacies by presenting their university or college offer letter.
Emphasising the importance of vaccination, Dr. Langford urged eligible individuals to take advantage of the free offer, saying, "Although rare, meningitis is a serious problem if contracted."
The vaccination process is quick and simple, providing long-lasting protection against the disease.
