Margate is being put forward as a candidate for the first ever UK Town of Culture, with the government set to select one town to receive £3 million for a cultural initiative in 2028.

This move follows the Isle of Thanet's recent exclusion from the shortlist for the UK City of Culture 2028.

Thanet District Council is swiftly developing a bid on behalf of the community, with an initial stakeholder meeting held on Wednesday, 25th March that showed strong support.

Cultural Assets and Community Backing

Margate's candidacy is strengthened by its significant cultural assets, infrastructure, and organisation necessary for delivering a strong cultural programme.

The proposal is further bolstered by evidence reflecting the cultural priorities of Margate and Thanet's residents.

Expedited Submission Process

The work to frame the proposal is progressing rapidly, with expressions of interest due by 31st March 2026.

Should Margate be shortlisted, grassroots involvement will be a key component of the proposed activities.

As the town rallies to secure this unique honour, it aims to pave the way for significant cultural advancement, shaping a vibrant and enduring legacy for its residents.
