Kent students tell us viral term 'red flag' opens conversations around domestic abuse as road show visits college
The session also focuses on knife crime, the law and online safety
A Kent sixth form student has told us the prevalence of the term 'red flags' in society is bringing abuse into conversation.
It comes as officers from Kent Police’s Child Centred Policing Team and the Kent and Medway Violence Reduction Unit are working with charities and guest speakers including Kent County Council's Youth Hub and Prevent Team at a series of roadshows around the district.
Greatest Hits Radio spoke to year 12 student Darcy who told us "red flags has become such a big term that we recognise, but it's also important to recognise green flags and learn how to build healthy relationships ourselves."
Speaking more broadly about what Darcy learnt from the show she said "I think it's important to recognise that it is men and women, there is a conversation that needs to be had about the fact it's not just men against women, there are male victims."
It's not just domestic violence that the students are taught about, the sessions also focused on Drug and Alcohol misuse, Prevent, Knife Crime, Active Bystander and the Pledge Positive Thinking, Online Safety and the Law.
Speaking about the Knife Crime section, pupil Chloe told us "so many people can be impacted even if they're not aware of it.
It's one of those things where you don't realise the seriousness of until it happens to you or something happens locally."
Pupils are also given advice on what activities are available for them locally, information on online safety, and take part in discussions.
The events are hosted by Robbie White, star of Netflix series Heartstopper.
