Online safety campaigners from Kent have told us Ofcom's new codes, which set out what sites must do to protect young people, don't go far enough.

As part of the online safety act social media firms could be hit with heavy fines or even banned from operating in the UK.

Linzie Meaden is the regional lead for the smartphone free childhood campaign.

She says: “Smartphones are by design addictive and children are getting really addicted. I mean, 2 to 5 hours per day children are spending on smartphones – which is just wrong.”

Lizzie also told us: “Tech companies know what they are doing. It’s all about money at the end of the day, so they’re going to find anyway they can to ensure they’re still getting through to target children.”

New rules from the regulator Ofcom will include tougher age checks for under-18s and protections from strangers.

Tech firms have been told they will have to do more to protect children from dangerous online content.
