Kent woman defies heart disease with London Summer Walk challenge
Today Jessica Anderson embarks on 25km walk across London for British Heart Foundation
Jessica Anderson from Hawkinge, Kent, is planning to undertake the London Summer Walk Ultra Challenge this August, after enduring a lifelong battle with complex congenital heart disease.
Born with bicuspid aortic valve stenosis, Jessica spent much of her childhood dealing with heart failure.
Defying medical advice to avoid strenuous activity, she actively participated in sports like cross-country running and netball, refusing to let her condition confine her.
Overcoming significant health challenges, Jessica has undergone three open-heart surgeries. Her journey began at 14 when surgeons first replaced her heart valves, followed by a second major operation 18 months later.
In her early twenties, heart failure led to her third surgery, resulting in an aortic valve and ascending aorta replacement.
Her greatest triumph arrived in 2020 with the birth of her daughter, Amelia, despite previous warnings from cardiologists about her unlikely chances of having children.
The London Summer Walk challenge reflects Jessica's journey and supports the British Heart Foundation, which has played a crucial role in her survival. She aims to contribute to ongoing research efforts, raising more than £2,000 so far.
In order to prepare Jessica has been on a dedicated training journey, starting with short walks during lunch breaks and escalating to longer walks and cardio activities like Zumba, aerobics, and swimming—all toeing the line of her health limitations.
Jessica said:
"I’m taking on this 25km challenge to give something back and to show that despite having a lifelong heart condition, you can still do incredible things.
"I just want to kind of keep my younger self in my mind the whole time I'm doing this walk, so that I can just kind of go, 'see, I told you, you can do it'."
The London Summer Walk, part of the Ultra Challenge Series, offers routes ranging from 10k to marathon distances, showcasing iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge and the Thames Flood Barrier.
Jessica hopes her story encourages others facing similar struggles to believe in their own capabilities and do something with intent.
