Motorists in Kent are being encouraged to plan ahead of their Christmas journeys as we enter one of "the busiest travel periods of the year".

National Highways has lifted 90% of roadworks across its motorways and major A roads from 0600hrs 21st December to 00:01 Fri 2nd Jan, aiming to keep traffic flowing over the festive period.

However, drivers are still being warned of increased congestion, particularly near ports, airports, and shopping centres.

National Highways spokesperson Andrew Broughton has advised drivers to prepare thoroughly before setting out. “Christmas can be one of the busiest times on our roads, so we’ve lifted as many roadworks as possible. There are still some works in place, but planning your journey carefully and checking road conditions can make a real difference to ensure you travel safely.”

The busiest routes across Kent are likely to include those leading to ports and the Channel Tunnel, with higher traffic levels expected on Christmas Eve, as well as areas surrounding major retail hubs on Boxing Day.

While Operation Brock—a traffic management measure designed for heavy goods vehicles heading to the Channel Tunnel—has now been lifted on the M20 motorway, National Highways has urged drivers to remain vigilant when travelling near the Kent ports.

Preparing for travel

National Highways have shared a "TRIP" acronym for drivers preparing to travel this Christmas:

T – Top up: Ensure you have enough fuel, oil, and screenwash for your journey.

R – Rest: Take breaks every two hours, especially on longer trips.

I – Inspect: Check your tyre pressure, tread depth, and lights before heading out.

P – Prepare: Plan your journey using online travel updates and be ready for any diversions or road closures.

National Highways recommends spending a few minutes checking essentials like tyres, lights, and screenwash before setting off, as small steps can prevent major delays or breakdowns later.

“The festive season is filled with varied travel patterns, from people visiting family and friends to last-minute shoppers heading to retail parks,” Andrew Broughton said. “This makes the roads busier in a different way than usual commuter congestion, so planning ahead is more important than ever.”

For those who experience a breakdown during their journey, Andrew Broughton stressed the importance of staying safe. “If you break down on a motorway, as advice always states, leave your vehicle and cross the barrier if it’s safe to do so. Safety must be your priority.”

Road closures and diversions

While no major road closures are planned for Kent during this period, residents heading towards Hampshire should be aware of closures on the M27 from Christmas Eve through 4th January. Diversions will be in place for drivers travelling through the area.

Drivers can check online for the latest traffic updates, closures, and conditions before heading out to ensure smooth journeys during the holiday period.
