Kent charity warns new funding is vital to bring life-saving aid to Ukraine
A Kent-based charity has warned that new funding is urgently needed to continue supporting Ukrainian firefighters and rescue teams after delivering more than 150 emergency vehicles and large amounts of vital equipment to the country.

FIRE AID, which works with UK fire services and international partners, has sent fire engines, ambulances, rescue boats, medical supplies and thousands of pieces of firefighting equipment to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The charity says the demand for help remains high as Ukrainian firefighters continue to work in extremely dangerous conditions, often responding to fires and rescues during missile and drone attacks.
According to official figures, hundreds of fire stations and vehicles have been destroyed, and many firefighters have been injured or killed while carrying out their duties.
“True everyday heroes”
We spoke to filmmaker Edward Matthews, who has been working alongside Ukrainian firefighters and documenting their experiences.
“Ukrainian firefighters are true everyday heroes,” he said.
“They run towards danger knowing they could be targeted, but they keep going to save lives. Their courage is unbelievable.”
Matthews has also been involved in promoting Brave Minds, a project linked to FIRE AID that provides mental health support for Ukrainian emergency workers dealing with trauma caused by the war.
“The physical damage is obvious,” he said.
“But the emotional toll is huge. Mental health support is just as important as the equipment.”
More Help Needed
FIRE AID says that while more than 150 rescue vehicles have already been delivered, continued funding is essential to maintain future convoys and expand mental health support programmes.
A spokesperson for the charity said:
“Every donation helps us put life-saving equipment into the hands of firefighters who desperately need it. Without ongoing support, this work cannot continue.”
The charity is now urging individuals, businesses and organisations to support its efforts as the war in Ukraine continues.
