Retailers and hospitality businesses in Kent are hoping for a much-needed cash injection this Boxing Day, according to the CEO of Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, Tudor Price.

Speaking on the challenges faced by the sector, Tudor Price said local businesses have endured a tough year with increasing business rates and shifting consumer habits. “Most retailers are looking for a major cash injection to help balance the books after what has been a difficult year,” he explained.

Early data on shopping trends for 2025 offers mixed insights. While overall spending levels are showing an increase, it's unclear whether this is due to rising prices or heightened consumer activity. “Online shopping now accounts for nearly 30% of sales, continuing a trend that retailers need to adapt to. We’re also seeing more focus on gifting experiences, such as vouchers, as consumers look for memorable presents over physical gifts,” Tudor Price noted.

Voucher purchases are good news for retailers and hospitality businesses, Mr Price explained, as only a small percentage of them are ever redeemed, making them profitable options for struggling businesses.

Tips for supporting local this festive season

With the growth of online shopping, Mr Price shared advice for consumers wishing to shop safely and support their local economy.

  • Choose trusted websites: Avoid purchasing from social media platforms unless you know the vendor is reliable.
  • Use a credit card for purchases: This offers additional protection in case of issues with your order.
  • Opt for vouchers: Experiences are increasingly popular as festive gifts, and gift cards can give significant support to local retailers and hospitality services.

Mr Price encouraged consumers to shop carefully yet thoughtfully, saying, “Support your local businesses by choosing to shop locally online when possible, while enjoying quality time with friends and family this festive season.”

Retail trends for 2025

According to the Chamber of Commerce’s analysis, consumer preferences continue to shift towards experience-based gifting, which includes activities, days out, and gift vouchers purchased in place of physical products. This trend reflects a growing focus on creating lasting memories, especially during the festive season.

“We’re seeing early indications of a shift toward experiences over physical gifts,” Mr Price said. “This is a trend that benefits the hospitality and events sector while encouraging businesses to adapt to these preferences and make sure they cater to what consumers are looking for.”

With Kent retailers relying on Boxing Day sales to offset challenging conditions earlier in the year, Mr Price urged consumers to consider their purchasing decisions carefully and to keep safety in mind when shopping online.
