SOS Whitstable to hold water protest with Danny Dyer
The meeting will take place in Sheerness this morning
Actor Danny Dyer, television personality Dani Dyer, and singer Becky Hill will join campaigners at the "Stop the Sewage" protest in Leysdown-on-Sea, demanding the water industry's return to public ownership.
The protest, organised by SOS Whitstable, is set for Sunday 20th September at 11:00am, starting at The Garden Café, Shellness Road.
Ed Acteson, co-founder of SOS Whitstable, has launched a petition advocating for public ownership of the water industry, gaining over 316,000 signatures.
The campaign highlights failures in privatisation, citing massive sewage discharge into waterways while funds flow to shareholders instead of infrastructure and pollution prevention.
Acteson stated, "Water is an essential service, not a vehicle for private profit. We want an industry that benefits people and the environment."
On hopeful next steps he added: "We put together a petition calling for public ownership a couple of years ago, and it's got over 316,000 signatures now, making it one of the most supported petitions of its kind in UK history.
"So it really demonstrates the absolute strength of public feeling about this. And we're pretty sure that with this protest and support from the celebrities speaking, we can raise it a lot higher. And we're aiming to try and reach 500,000 signatures.
"We believe that there are no credible arguments against public ownership at this point. We think that every single thing points to this being a logical progression in fixing the issues of sewage pollution and water shortages and so on, and fixing the entire water industry.
"So by trying to reach 500,000 signatures, we want to really display to the government that people are absolutely sick of this, that we want change, that we need change."
Attendees are encouraged to bring placards and make their voices heard, joining a speaker lineup featuring Danny Dyer, Dani Dyer, Becky Hill, Cliff Roney, and Ash Smith.
