Carers in the Medway area are invited to an informative marketplace event today, aimed at connecting them with vital services and support.

It's estimated there are over 25,000 people in Medway providing care for a relative or friend.

The event, hosted by Medway Council, will take place at the former Wilkos shop on the ground floor of the Pentagon Shopping Centre in Chatham from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

The meeting will bring together various council departments and local organisations offering advice and guidance tailored to those caring for family members, friends, or others.

The event is designed to help carers access services, ask questions, and share any concerns.

Medway Council’s Adult Social Care team will host the marketplace and provide access to information on topics such as financial assessments, respite services, and transitions for children into adult care.

Council departments covering housing, benefits, and health-related education will also be in attendance, while external organisations including Carers First, Medway Voluntary Action, Kent Association for the Blind, and Healthwatch will be on hand to provide their expertise.

For those wishing to speak privately, a confidential space will also be available.

Medway Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Teresa Murray, highlighted the importance of recognising carers within the community.

“Not everyone who cares for someone thinks they’re classed as a carer, but we know how much you are doing and can offer support to help you, and we can work with those you care for too,” Cllr Murray said.

“Carers are selfless people who give their time and energy to others, to the extent they might sometimes overlook themselves, but they play a vital role and it’s important we recognise their contribution. If you look after a family member or friend – or know someone who does – we would love to meet them and make sure they know what’s available to help at our marketplace event in Chatham on Tuesday, 25th November.”

Carers attending the event will also have the opportunity to sign up to receive further communications from the council’s Adult Social Care team, allowing them to stay informed about future initiatives and events.
