The Archbishop of Canterbury has described the deaths of two young people in a meningitis outbreak in Kent as a “devastating loss”.

Dame Sarah Mullally, who was preparing to begin a pilgrimage to Canterbury from London on Tuesday, said her prayers are with the families of all those affected.

A Year 13 pupil in Faversham named locally as Juliette Kenny and a student at the University of Kent have died in the outbreak, with others treated in hospital.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dame Sarah said: “My prayers are with the families of the two young people who have tragically died in the meningitis outbreak in Kent.

“My heart goes out to them in their devastating loss.

“I’m praying too for all those who’ve been affected by the outbreak, and for everyone working so hard to care for them and protect local communities.”

Dame Sarah is undertaking a six-day walking pilgrimage from London ahead of her formal installation – or enthronement – service at Canterbury Cathedral.

She is expected to arrive in Canterbury on Sunday, ahead of the service on Wednesday March 25.

Canterbury Cathedral said it is following guidance from public health authorities.

A statement on the cathedral website added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have been plunged into grief alongside all those who are working hard to sustain the wellbeing and health of others.

“We continue to follow the guidance being offered and stand ready to offer our support.”
