The developer behind plans for a wind farm on remote moorland on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales says it has no plans to build a solar farm on the site amid fears the site could be expanded in the future.

Campaigners fighting plans for the Hope Moor Wind Farm have highlighted the expansion of the Crystal Rig Wind Farm, in the Scottish Borders, as an example of how green energy schemes can develop over time.

Crystal Rig is run by Fred. Olsen Renewables, which is behind plans to install 23 turbines, each at least 200m high, on moorland between Arkengarthdale and Teesdale.

Tim Wilson, from the Hope Moor Wind Farm Action Group, told a public meeting last week that the first phase of Crystal Rig was for 25 turbines.

He added: “This was followed by phase two for a further 60 turbines, followed by phase three for a further six and phase four for a further 11, which are currently under construction.

“So from initial planning (permission) for 25 turbines, which is potentially nearly what we’re looking at, there are 91 already operational and 11 more in the construction phase.

“And to make sure they don’t miss out on an opportunity, Fred. Olsen are now building a solar farm on the site below the turbines.”

Mr Wilson said if the Hope Moor proposal got approved, there was nothing to stop the developer from trying to expand the site in the future

He added: “Whilst the concept of 23 turbines on this beautiful moorland is devastating, the potential to double or treble in size in future years cannot be ruled out, with a consequent impact on the landscape and wildlife, completely destroying the character of our countryside.”

In response, a spokesperson for Fred. Olsen Renewables said the current proposals for Hope Moor Wind Farm were for up to 23 turbines.

They added: “While some of our other renewable energy projects have been extended over time, we currently have no plans to increase the number of turbines at Hope Moor should the project receive planning consent.

“Hope Moor is being developed as an onshore wind farm project, and there are no proposals for a solar farm as part of the scheme. Any significant changes to the project in the future would be subject to the relevant planning and consultation requirements.”
