The MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough has met with Rail Minister Lord Hendy to discuss the future of the York Area Capacity Scheme (YACS). Tom Gordon is calling for the reinstatement of a paused segment that would enhance rail services between Harrogate and York.

Gordon says it would alleviate congestion at Skelton Junction—one of the network's most congested points—causing frequent delays and capacity constraints for passengers approaching York Station.

The proposed reinstatement of YACS includes an additional electrified track between York Station and Skelton Junction, estimated at approximately £150 million.

Tom Gordon says this investment would complement recent infrastructure enhancements surrounding York, including digital signalling upgrades and developments within the TransPennine Route and East Coast Main Line.

"A firm commitment would provide much-needed reassurance to passengers and strengthen the case for further improvements."

"If we fix the York junction, it unlocks potential to dual the whole line or introduce new developments in Flaxby or Knaresborough."

"We need to speed up improvements - make it reliable for those who already commute and a viable option for people who want to travel sustainably."

Tom Gordon says the Minister concurred that it is a sound investment and agreed to look into a timetable.
