Passengers are projected to make more than 1 million journeys on the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway this year, as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. Northern recorded nearly 995,000 passenger journeys on the route in 2025, the highest since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company has organised a series of celebratory events, including today’s chartered steam train journey between Carlisle and York

Known for breathtaking vistas, the railway offers spectacular views of the Pennine Hills, the Yorkshire Dales, and Cumbria’s Eden Valley. The Ribblehead Viaduct, a remarkable 24-arch structure, remains a highlight along the line.

Named one of Europe’s top 10 most scenic train trips by Lonely Planet earlier this year, the line promises an unforgettable travel experience. Alex Hornby, Northern’s commercial and customer director, said: “It’s easy to see why this line is so popular and we’re confident we will see more than 1 million journeys this year. Customers can enjoy miles of breathtaking scenery, which changes throughout the year.”

Pete Myers, chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, emphasised the line's importance in connecting communities and supporting sustainable tourism: “In our special anniversary year, we are working closely with communities along the line to provide a host of events for visitors and locals to enjoy.”

The Settle-Carlisle section was completed in 1875, with passenger services introduced on 1st May 1876 following initial freight operations. Campaigns in the 1980s successfully preserved the line for future generations, ensuring its continued use and enjoyment.
