Ripon's Workhouse Museum opens after £2.8m revamp
Major redevelopment brings stories of hardship and heritage to life
Ripon’s newly transformed Workhouse Museum opens today after a £2.8 million redevelopment.
The extensively rehabilitated museum offers an immersive journey, telling the stories of former residents who entered the workhouse gates as a last resort, set against the backdrop of Britain's most complete remaining Victorian workhouses.
Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with support from entities such as The Wolfson Foundation and North Yorkshire County Council, the restoration and expansion efforts have breathed new life into key buildings, including the Residents’ Block, previously in disrepair from years of varied use.
Restoration included fixing structural issues, reinstating historical features, and opening up new areas like the original workhouse cellar, which retains significant historical artifacts.
Dr Laura Allan, curator at Ripon Museums Trust, regards this as a glimpse into the past: “The cellar is particularly exciting… it's like glimpsing behind the curtain, seeing how it truly was.”
Designed to be thought-provoking and engaging, this visitor experience allows people to partake in activities reflective of workhouse life, such as spending time in a vagrants' cell or performing tasks like oakum picking and yard sweeping.
