Public urged to shape new strategy for North Yorkshire's unpaid carers
End of consultation period approaches for new all-age carers' strategy
As the consultation period draws to a close, North Yorkshire Council is encouraging residents to share their thoughts on a proposed all-age carers' strategy aimed at enhancing support for unpaid carers across the county.
This draft strategy seeks to establish a comprehensive plan to recognise, value, and support carers of all ages.
Councillor Michael Harrison, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for health and adult services, highlighted the goal of the strategy: “We aim to ensure that North Yorkshire is a county where carers of all ages and backgrounds are recognised, heard and supported to live well.”
The council invites anyone who is caring for someone, has cared for someone previously, works with carers, or wishes to influence carers' support in North Yorkshire to provide feedback. Such input will assist in refining a strategy that accurately represents the realities of caring and ensures adequate support for those dedicating their time to helping others.
An estimated 54,000 unpaid carers reside in North Yorkshire, from young people to those in their 90s. Their efforts support family members, friends, and neighbours to live independently but often impact carers' health, finances, and personal opportunities. Many do not self-identify as carers, which can prevent them from accessing available support.
The proposed “Caring for All” strategy outlines four priorities to enhance carers’ support:
Collaborative and accessible support for carers.
Helping carers stay healthy and well.
Improving identification of carers and recognition of their roles.
Evidence-based personalised support tailored to carers' needs.
Feedback is welcomed until 27th September. Heidi Watson, CEO of Carers’ Resource, emphasised the importance of the consultation: “As unpaid carers, you are the experts and this is your chance to make sure we include what is important to you.”
