Abusers are misusing technology to control and monitor victims

Domestic abuse is evolving, with technology increasingly being used by perpetrators as a tool for control and surveillance, according to IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services).

Modern devices such as smart speakers, location-tracking apps, and social media platforms that are integral to daily life are being misused to target victims, creating added complexities for survivors trying to regain control of their lives.

Carmel Offord, engagement manager at IDAS, explained the growing challenge:

“While technology provides countless benefits, abusers are finding ways to turn it into a weapon. Things like location tracking, smart speakers, or even social media platforms can be manipulated by perpetrators to monitor victims’ movements and activities, making it feel like their lives are constantly under surveillance.

“Survivors are often told to just block someone or delete an app, but these are not practical solutions. Technology is so embedded in our everyday lives, and it’s vital that we empower survivors to use it safely rather than limiting their world further because of abuse.”

IDAS is working to raise awareness of digital abuse and offer support to survivors in managing these challenges. Increasingly, those impacted by online abuse are encouraged to report misuse, as it can provide crucial evidence against perpetrators.

“Abuse often leaves digital fingerprints, and there are ways survivors can gather evidence. Raising awareness is key, because understanding how technology can be manipulated is an important step in fighting back against its misuse,” Carmel added.

IDAS is urging victims and survivors to seek help if they feel that technology is being used to control or harm them. Support and practical advice are available through IDAS at idas.org.uk.
