An event's being held in Harrogate today to teach businesses about new anti terror rules coming in next year.

It is being hosted by North Yorkshire Council in partnership with Counter Terrorism Policing North East, will run from 9:30am to 3:30pm on Friday, 26 September, and is open to a wide range of attendees. This includes businesses, event organisers, community groups, faith-based organisations, and representatives from Town and Parish Councils.

Martyn’s Law introduces a new legal requirement for certain public premises and events to implement measures aimed at preventing and mitigating the impact of terrorist attacks. It applies to locations used primarily for activities such as retail, hospitality, entertainment, education, healthcare, or worship where it is reasonably expected that 200 or more people may be present at one time.

The event will feature expert briefings from Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), offering practical advice, guidance on compliance, and access to free training opportunities. Attendees will also hear from Figen Murray OBE, mother of Martyn Hett – one of the 22 victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack – whose campaigning led to the creation of the legislation.

It's hoped those attending will gain a clearer understanding of the scope and responsibilities outlined in the Act and learn how to better protect public spaces and events.
