Grimsby man found guilty of historic child sex offences
Police say the investigation began in 2022 when three people came forward
A 77-year-old man from Grimsby has been found guilty of a series of non-recent sexual offences involving three children.
Edward Sherriff, of Wainfleet Road, was convicted at Grimsby Crown Court on Tuesday (22 July) following a seven-day trial.
The jury unanimously found him guilty of multiple charges, including rape of a child under 13, several counts of sexual assault, indecent assault, and gross indecency.
Police say the investigation began in 2022 when three people came forward to report prolonged abuse.
Sherriff was arrested that June and denied any wrongdoing when questioned by detectives.
He’s due to be sentenced at a later date.
"forcing them to relive the horrendous ordeal"
Detective Sergeant Chris Clarke from our Domestic Abuse Investigation Team, who led the case, said: “Sherriff has now been found guilty of committing prolonged and deliberate sexual abuse against innocent and vulnerable children, with offences spanning from 1980 to 2022.
"Over the years, he exploited their trust using manipulation, threats, and emotional abuse to silence them.
“I know how incredibly difficult it is to come forward and take that first step to report crimes of such appalling behaviour, and I’d like to start by commending the victims for their bravery and strength throughout the entirety of the investigation and court proceedings.
“Sherriff subjected the victims and their families to a trial, forcing them to relive the horrendous ordeal all over again.
"Whilst the verdict will not detract from the pain and suffering endured, or the long-lasting impact this has caused, I do hope it offers some reassurance knowing such a sickening man can no longer cause harm to them or any other child.
“I cannot commend the victims enough for taking that step and coming forward to report Sherriff.
"It is never easy, and the judicial process can be long and complex. Their bravery cannot be underestimated.
“It is never the victim’s fault, and I would strongly appeal for any child who is being manipulated into doing something they don’t want to do, or anyone who suspects crimes of this nature are taking place, to please speak to a trusted adult or friend and report it to us, when you are ready.
“I also want to take a moment to commend Blue Door for their vital work in supporting victims, their ongoing efforts are crucial in helping victims find a voice and access the care they deserve."
