A man from Cleethorpes who sexually abused a child over a three year period has been sentenced to ten years in prison at Grimsby Crown Court.

Melvin Denton, aged 79 of Windsor Road in Cleethorpes, pleaded not guilty to four counts of indecency with a child and seven counts of indecent assault relating to a series of non-recent sexual offences towards a girl between 1997 and 2000.

Following a four-day trial, a jury found him unanimously guilty of four counts of gross indecency and five counts of indecent assault with a girl under 14.

Officer in the case Detective Constable Megan Sherwin from our Protecting Vulnerable Persons Unit said:

“I would like to start by commending the woman for her bravery in coming forward and thanking her for the patience she has displayed during the entirety of this investigation.

“Whilst the result will not take the pain and suffering away, I hope that it will provide the family some reassurance in knowing that Denton will finally face the consequences of his abhorrent actions.

“Denton was a manipulative man who took advantage of an innocent young girl’s trust in him, all for his own sexual gratification, over many years.

“We take reports of sexual assault and sexual offences extremely seriously and we will continue to seek justice for those who have suffered at the hands of such incomprehensible crimes.

“It is never, ever the victim’s fault, and I would strongly appeal for anyone who is suffering to please come forward to us.

“If you have been a victim of any sexual offences, or know someone who has, we urge you to report it to the police via our non-emergency number 101. Always call 999 in an emergency."
