A woman who was left with her attacker in Accident and Emergency is suing Police Scotland.

Carol O’Reilly was attacked by her partner Michael Harvey on a Glasgow street in 2023, when he repeatedly hit her head into the ground, knocking her unconscious.

The pair were picked up by police and taken to A&E at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where Harvey prevented Ms O’Reilly from being treated, and was allowed to take Ms O’Reilly back to their hotel alone where he continued the attack.

"Horrific act of violence"

Staff discovered her unconscious and bleeding in the bathroom the following morning, when the couple failed to check out.

Ms O’Reilly was left with brain injuries, having to learn how to walk, talk, and swallow again during a six month stay in hospital.

Harvey was jailed for nine years for attempted murder.

Lawyers Digby Brown said in a statement on Ms O’Reilly’s behalf: “What happened to Ms O’Reilly was a horrific act of violence and which left her fighting for her life.

"Her life will never be the same"

“The injuries she suffered continue to impact her every day and as a result her life will never be the same again.

“As this is an ongoing legal case it would be inappropriate to comment further but we will continue to support Ms O’Reilly with her recovery and pursuit for recognition.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware that the case is ongoing and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further."
