Last updated 11th Oct 2025
Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to return to Rangers.
The former England captain was the frontrunner to take over from Russell Martin who was sacked last weekend.
However, it is now understood Gerrard does not feel it is the right time to come back to Ibrox.
The club’s board are continuing their work to appoint a new head coach.
Gerrard met with Rangers owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe over the weekend with talks initially said to be positive and constructive.
The pair are now left looking at other options with one week to go until the team are back in action.
Many supporters had shown their excitement at a potential return for Gerrard who was seen as a unifying figure during a time of turmoil.
The Light Blues have won just one of their opening seven Premiership games and have two defeats from their opening two Europa League games.
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is another name that is believed to have been interviewed for the job.
The 36-year old worked as a coach at RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national teams.
His spell at Hillsborough began in October 2023 and came to an end in the summer due to the club's ownership and financial issues.
