Hamilton hit with season-long transfer embargo by SPFL

Hamilton Academical have been hit with a season-long transfer embargo by the SPFL.

The League One side have been punished after failing "to settle its tax obligations".

John Rankin's side were relegated from the Championship last season after suffering a 15-point deduction.

An SPFL statement read: “Hamilton Academical FC admitted to repeated breaches of league rules, failing to pay tax owed to HMRC on three separate occasions, as well as failing to inform the SPFL of these defaults.”

Alongside the embargo, which will remain in force until the close of the 2025-26 season, the governing body has issued a £7,500 fine, with £5,000 of that sum suspended.

Under current SPFL regulations, clubs under transfer bans may only sign amateur players or professionals born on or after 1 January 2006.

Hamilton have played three matches in the Premier Sports Cup group stage this campaign.

They beat Stirling Albion 2-0 before defeats to both Hearts and Dunfermline.

Accies host Dumbarton in their final group match tomorrow before kicking off their league campaign next weekend against Montrose.

Hamilton's home matches are being played at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld.
